FRIEND OF THE FAMILY PROGRAM

The average disabled-worker benefit is about $1,236 a month, and 90 percent of beneficiaries get less than $2,000 a month. Most beneficiaries — especially unmarried ones — rely on SSDI for most of their income. SSDI benefits replace about half of past earnings for a median beneficiary  Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments will stop if you are engaged in what Social Security calls “substantial gainful activity.” SGA, as it's known, is defined in 2021 as earning more than $1,310 a month (or $2,190 if you are blind). 

Shekinah Housing Services, Inc. serves as extra support for the struggling single mom that receives SSI or SSDI benefits. We are a bit friend of the family that provides rental assistance, gas cards, extra food support, toiletries, diapers and will even pay for items that other programs don't deem essential such school field trips, musical instruments, drivers license exams, medical co-pays, state identifications.  We also provide birthday boxes which includes everything to have a home birthday celebration including a gift.  It is hard being a single mother.  Not every single mother is single by choice. Several women who have utilized our services have been victims of domestic abuse and often their ex-partners use money as leverage to hold them financial hostage.
